This engaging social-history museum opened in 1986 and was a world first as well as being Australia's oldest museum of its kind. It predated the Immigration Museum in Melbourne and the Ellis Island Museum in the United States.

The Migration Museum in Adelaide tells the story of the many migrants who have made South Australia their home. It showcases both permanent and rotating collection of works, over 100-plus nationalities logged in its database, along with some poignant personal stories.

It is also a celebration of diverse cultures of South Australia as well as takes a look at the more challenging aspects of immigration history, including the impact of colonisation on Indigenous people, through the exhibition galleries on display.

Some of the exhibitions include:
  • Superdiversity: Twenty-first Century Migration
  • Immigration in the 20th Century
  • Leaving Britain and Establishing South Australia
  • Impact
  • In This Place

  • There are wide ranges of programs of activities to enjoy at the museum ranging from public events, family-friendly activities, and educational programs designed for school groups.

Discover the history of South Australia through the stories of people and communities at the exhibits at the Migration Museum, Adelaide this weekend!
