Celebrating all people for who they are

Australia's premier LGBTQIA+ cultural festival is back from 19 Jan to 10 Feb 2019. Midsumma Festival is 23 days of Queer Arts & Culture with a diverse festival program made up of visual arts, theatre, film, live music, parties, sport, social events and public forums. Featuring approximately 165 events by approximately 1600 culture-makers in over 75 venues across Melbourne and wider Victoria, it's HUGE and attended by an anticipated audience of over 265,000. Check out the program to see what's on, and start booking early for events you don't want to miss. You can also purchase tickets at the venue when doors open an hour before the show, but you risk bumping into a full-house with no tickets available.

There are also lots of freebie events, however, some still require you to secure your place by booking. No fees apply for ticketed-free events. If you're looking for a bargain, check the 2019 Earlybird Discounts. For those who are eligible, the usual concessions apply; just be sure to take your concession cards with you as proof. If you haven't already picked up a hardcopy program from the usual suspects, you can either buy it online or check it out here.

Kick-start the celebrations with the Midsumma Carnival on Sunday 20 Jan 2019 from 11am to 10pm at Alexandra Gardens, St Kilda Rd, Melbourne. It's an all-day, all-night party with bite sized performances for you at this glass-free event. Be environmentally conscious and bring your reusable vessels and paper or stainless steel straws and party into an evening of dance, a fantastic line-up of sassy sounds and DJs.

On the same day (20 Jan) The Iconic Dog Show is back from 3pm on the Picnic Precinct Stage at the Gardens, for a fun day out in the park with your pooch. If you're entering your prized pooch, do it on the day at the Guide Dogs Victoria Stall (Yellow 5A) between 11am and 2.30pm SHARP!. Entry is free. There are prizes to be won, so which category do you think your dog will take out? Cutest Bitch; Sexiest Stud; Best Trick; Best Dressed; Best Owner/Dog Combo; or, the ultimate Best Dog Overall?

The Midsumma Pride March on Sun 3 Feb 2019 is a colourful highlight of the event, starting at the new time of 11am, embarking on the kilometre-long fanfare to Catani Gardens, Fitzroy St, St Kilda. Rock up, frock up and fly your flags at a March that'll highlight the diverse groups within the queer community.

Kids and families are catered for with shows like Once Upon a Drag Storytime performed over three shows suited to families of all ages, especially the under 8s, with a more adult-oriented show in the evening. If your kids don't enjoy being contained, perhaps the Park Lounge or a Picnic at Forest Glade is the event for them. Check website for all other events that are kid friendly..

If films are your thing, Love, Simon and Unbroken are screening for free. However, if you want to get systematic, hydromatic, and ultramatic for a Greased Lightnin' special night at the Coburg Drive-In for a Grease sing-a-long, you'll need to book your tickets online.

Get the Festival Planner and start ticking off the events you'd like to see, be it Parties, Talks,
Social, Midsumma Westside, Body, Visual Arts and more at Hub Venues like Arts Centre Melbourne, Gasworks Arts Park, Hare Hole (Hares & Hyenas), Howler Mini-Hub and Theatre Works. The Facebook page and Events Page are also a great way to stay updated and interactive.

Sounds interesting, however it is vague. Looked up the Collins St website, but unfortunately doesn’t mentioned this event. It’s quite a long street, so it would be good to pinpoint which area to go.
