Midori Teppanyaki & Bar located at 27 Lake Street, Northbridge has an inviting façade with a grand entrance and green lights, reminiscent of a trendy bar.

Once we walked through the entrance, we were greeted by a set of grand, imposing stairs and a hotel-like reception area. The décor was certainly impressive so far, it was time to put the food to the test.

There are 3 teppanyaki tables on the ground level and a few chairs and tables on the first level for ala' carte meals. We arrived on a Friday night and were ushered to our table fairly quickly, but on busy weekend nights customers can sample a few drinks at the bar while waiting for a table. Their teppanyaki sets are not cheap but are perfect for nights where you are celebrating a special occasion and are looking for a treat.

I ordered the Geisha Set (The way of the flower) priced at $65 which started out with a salad with tomato and cucumber served with Midori salad dressing, followed by popcorn shrimp served with spicy creamy mayo and wasabi soy sauce, gyoza (or Japanese dumplings), a choice of salmon, prawns or scallops, teriyaki chicken or beef, assorted seasonal vegetables, streamed rice, miso soup and green tea ice-cream. Other sets available include the Samurai Set ($85) which consists of all the above plus salmon aburi which is nigiri sushi torched and drizzled with mayo and teriyaki sauce and beef tataki. The Midori set ($120) features pork belly with onion salsa and caramel miso and half a lobster cooked on the teppan.

I chose the scallop and teriyaki chicken option from the Geisha set and was happy with my choice. The dishes were small enough that I could have a little taste without ruining my appetite and big enough that I did not feel hungry after the meal was finished. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the teppanyaki chicken was delicious.

Midori's motto is "Theatre of Dining" and the chef certainly did put on a show. His skills with the knife were immediately apparent as he twirled it around chopping the ingredients with expertise. The audience were also roped in to be part of the act as we attempted (some of us failing) to catch pieces of scrambled eggs in our mouths. The chef then entranced the little ones and kept the rest of us warm with a "fire show" where a massive fire danced around our food for a few seconds.

We were ushered to individual tables for dessert (green tea ice-cream) so that the next group could take their seats at the teppan table. I thought this was a nice touch as we could hang around a little longer after our meal and socialize instead of being invited to leave.

Midori has an a' la carte menu as well with Japanese burger specials at lunch time and other choices such as pasta including an interesting combination called curry-bonara with lemon cream curry, vegetable and Japanese denkatsu curry with linguine. Mains range from around $26 to $40 with the famed wagyu steak available as well.

Midori is open for lunch from Monday to Sunday from 12pm to 3pm and for dinner from Sunday to Thursday from 5.30pm to 10pm and Friday to Saturday from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. You can book online via Dimmi or call them on 61 8 9328 2177.
