Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) drives drunk and causes an accident that kills a young woman. Four years later, on his release from prison, he returns to his hometown, a remote fishing village on Crockett Island. Around the same time, a new priest arrives on the island and strange things start to happen.
Midnight Mass is a horror miniseries written and directed by Mike Flannagan (Hush, Occulus, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor). It stars his wife Kate Siegel (Gerald's Game, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House), who also starred in and co-wrote Hush. Siegel plays Erin Green, a woman who grew up on Crockett Island and left for the mainland, who has recently returned, single and pregnant. Rahul Kohli (also from The Haunting of Bly Manor as well as iZombie), is great as the local Sherriff even though his American accent slips from time to time. Newcomer Annarah Cymone plays Leeza, a local girl paralysed in a hunting accident, who is apparently healed by the priest (which is not really a spoiler since it's in the trailer).
Hamish Linklater (from Legion) is compelling as the mysterious Father Paul. However, it is Bev Keene (played by Samantha Sloyan), the devout and over-bearing member of the local church who is the real villain of the show. There is a moment that gave me chills when Bev sees something that would cause most people to realise they were on the wrong side, and/or possibly insane, and she just accepts it without question.
Midnight Mass is a different kind of horror story from what I was expecting, but I was not disappointed. I can't say much about what kind of threat the characters face because it makes an interesting surprise. There is beautiful cinematography, lots of striking religious imagery, great performances and a fair few scares. It will leave you thinking about it long after it's over. It began screening on Netflix on September 24, 2021.
Content Warning- Since it's a horror series, it's not surprising that there is some violence and gore. However, some people might want a heads up that this series also contains the death of animals (cats and a dog) and infant loss.
