Middleton is a humble township that is centrally located along the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. It provides the perfect base to explore this area of the South Australian coast, as it is nestled between the popular holiday destinations of Port Elliot and Goolwa and not far from Victor Harbour.

There are activities for all seasons in Middleton most of which are centred around the beach. When the temperature rises and the school holidays are happening, it attracts tourists and holiday makers looking for a relaxing break to bask in the summer sun. Through June and July, whale watchers bring their binoculars in hope of catching a glimpse of the whales that migrate to the warm Southern ocean. When the swell is up, Middleton is overrun with surfers hunting the perfect wave.

Stay for a day, the weekend or longer and discover what Middleton has to offer.

[SECTION]Stay at Middleton Caravan Park[/SECTION]

Middelton Caravan Park makes a great place to base your holiday. Depending on your needs there are powered and unpowered camp sites or cabins with or without an ensuite. The campsites are shady and lawned while the cabins are clean and comfortable. Standard facilities include a camp kitchen, bbq, laundry, showers and restrooms.

A nice addition that children and animal lovers will appreciate is an enclosure with chickens, geese, rabbits and an inquisitive peacock that roams the premises.

Nearby you will find a bakery, restaurant, general store, surf shop, playground, tennis court, beach and more to keep you amused and well fed.

Prices per night for two people (extra persons $10, children under 5 free) are as follows:
Deluxe Ensuite Cabin: $100- $120
Ensuite Cabin: $90- $100
Standard Cabin: $80- $90

If the caravan park isn't for you, try the Beach Huts for a stylish alternative.

[SECTION]Surf at Middleton Beach[/SECTION]

Middleton has some of the State's best surfing beaches. The point break at Middleton Point provides fairly consistent waves most of the year and is surfable at all tide stages. The beach is rocky and rips abound, so it is certainly not recommended for the inexperienced or the faint hearted. When the swell rises surfers come from far and wide to surf here, so it is not only rocks to be wary of but crowds too.

For daily surf reports visit Swellnet .

If you have never surfed but always wanted to then you can participate in surf lessons. These supervised lessons will provide you with the basic and must have skills, information and equipment to have you riding the waves at Middleton.

Group classes are twice a day for about two hours at a cost of $49 per person. Other programs available include after school surfing and surf camps at Middleton, Port Elliot or Goolwa.

To book your surf lessons or camps visit Surf and Sun .

[SECTION]Whale Watching at Middleton Beach[/SECTION]

During winter Southern Right whales migrate from the sub-antartic to warm up along the Fleurieu Peninsula, considered by many as whale watching paradise. Middleton has one of the best whale watching vantage points at Bashams Beach where you can see whales frolic.

The tell tale spray of water from the blow hole is usually your first clue that the dark lump in the water that could be a rock is actually a whale. The whales are very comfortable in the area and are known to come quite close to the shore.

Nearby Victor Harbour houses the South Australian Whale Centre's Information Booth . It provides whale watchers with information about the whales and whale sightings. The booth and the area gets very busy during whale watching season with hundreds of thousands of people greeting the whales each year.

[SECTION]Shop at Big Surf Australia[/SECTION]

If you want to look like a local you had better stop in at Big Surf Australia. Here you can deck yourself out in all the popular surf branded clothing. Get your boardies, bikinis, thongs, hoodies and everything you'll need to look cool and be comfortable. Looking good can be costly and luckily Big Surf Australia always seems to have a discount rack and runs generous sales throughout the year.

Big Surf Australia is popular with the surfers who migrate to the area and this is where they stock up on wax before hitting the waves. If you are just starting out or in the market for new surf board, this is the place to come as they stock an extensive array of boards and surf equipment to buy or hire.

[SECTION]Eat at Heritage Pies and Pastries[/SECTION]

This bakery is an institution in Middleton and is often filled with surfers replenishing themselves after a day in the waves (hence the seats are often damp and the floor sandy!). There is a lot to choose from with an extensive menu of sweet and savoury baked goods, delicious pastries and tantalising pizza slices. A trip to the beach wouldn't be the same without ice cream and so there is the obligatory freezer with all the favourites.

It is delightfully decorated with old surf and beach paraphernalia. The 'Board Room' is a great place to meet with friends, enjoy your pies and pastries and sign your name on the old surf boards that adorn the area.

For dinner, you can't go past a good old fashioned pub meal at the Middleton Tavern. It is affordable, family friendly and features an impressive display of maritime artifacts.

Or for contemporary Australian cuisine get the Blues at the Middleton Beach Huts.

[SECTION]Explore the Local Area[/SECTION]

There are two very special ways to explore the local area- The Cockle Train and The Encounter Bikeway. Or combine the two and hike or bike the first leg of the trip and take the Cockle Train on the way back.

From Middleton the Encounter Bikeway travels to either the river port of Goolwa or the Bluff and Heysen Trail at Victor Harbour. It is suitable for walkers and cyclists, or even skate boarders and roller bladers, and is wheel chair accessible. It is about a twenty kilometre stretch from Goolwa to Victor Harbour so make sure you pack a bottle of water. Along the way you'll be able to see native vegetation and wild life and witness the views change from coastal to rural to wetlands to the tourist hub of Victor Harbour. It is an ideal way to explore the Fleurieu Peninsula in all its glory.

The Cockle Train is aptly named after the cockles on Goolwa Beach and is a favourite amongst families and train enthusiasts. It is about a thirty minute journey on a traditional steam train from Goolwa to Victor Harbour through farmland and sand dunes and with stunning coastal views. It runs Wednesdays and Sundays, public holidays and every day during the South Australian school holidays. Scheduling and ticketing information can be found at www.steamrangerheritagerailiway.org

With trains and walks, surfing and whales, shopping and crafts, bakeries and restaurants, there is something for everyone to enjoy Middleton.
