5 Great Microbreweries in Perth

[ADVERT]Craft beer is becoming a big talking point in Australia. Every few months a new microbrewery pops up somewhere, and it all started in WA. In Australia, Western Australia is the home of craft beer, but the breweries here are often unappreciated due to lack of knowledge. So here's my list of the top 5 West Australian breweries within an hour of Perth.

Elmar's in the Valley
Elmar's has an extraordinary reputation for making some of the best German meats outside of Germany. The brewery opened up in Swan Valley aims to pair those traditional recipes with authentic German beer. They've done a good job of it too, sitting down at Elmar's you really feel as if your in a Bavarian beer hall.
For $30 you can get a full stein of beer to drink and& take home with you, if you can peel yourself away from the food that is. On the weekend the air is filled with traditional German entertainment, including yodelling of course.

Mash Brewery
Swan Valleys biggest success story is that of Mash. The progressive brewery now has three locations and cartons pushing through counters, but the original is still the best. The inside of the brewery is immaculate yet rather cosy - varnished wooden slabs along the side wall provide excellent seating areas. The beers are well flavoured and very refreshing, and they cook up a mean bowl of buffalo wings if you're feeling peckish.

Indian Ocean Brewery
Most of Mindarie keys is hideously expensive - thankfully their resident brewery is the opposite. With generous food specials on most nights of the week and fresh home brewed beer on tap the Indi is bustling every day of the week. Its an incredible place to watch the sun set over the super yachts and mega mansions of Mindarie marina.

The Monk Brewery & Kitchen
Fremantle is home to many iconic beer locations (Little Creatures, Sail & Anchor, Freo Doctor etc.) So its not surprising when the small players go unnoticed. The Monk - right across the road from Sail & Anchor - provides a constantly changing list of beers that accompany the gourmet food produced by the kitchen perfectly. Expect little known styles such as Marzens, Kolsch, Saisons as well as popular ales and lagers.

Feral Brewery
Home of the number one critics choice beer for 2012. Located in Baskerville, Feral has built a solid reputation for pushing the boundaries of beer creativity. Feral brewery is an ode to everything Australian. Full flavoured beers, big meals and an appetite for adventurous recipes (beer and food). The brewery has a very country feel about it, a very relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. Feral is a down to earth location and one close to the heart of every Perth beer afficionado.

Other Perth Microbreweries include the Principal, Brass Monkey, Nail, Degrees (ECU), Little Creatures, Last Drop, Ironbark, Sail & Anchor, Duckstein, Blacksalt and the Old Swan Brewery.
