Christopher Walken stares out of a window on Oxford Street. It's only his picture, of course, and it's being used as a pop-culture joke. He's advertising Micky's Café. I wander past at first, foolishly. On my way back I make the wiser choice. I'm in.

It's an obvious choice, really. While much of Oxford Street is refined and tasteful, Micky's is nothing less than a splash of colour. Red coats the front of the place, framing nice big windows where lucky diners get to watch the world go by. Inside, it's crowded, with booths and chairs competing for space with the front bar, which itself is crowded with all sorts of yumminess. It's a wrench to have to walk past the display (cakes resting beside bags of coffee, which themselves fight for room with fruit) and onto the free table in the back.Despite this crowding, Micky's is the kind of laid-back place you just don't see very often on Oxford Street. The menu presents down-to-earth kinds of items, wholesome even.* The staff are casual and friendly, and don't give The Look that is usually given to solo diners in busy food spots.*I couldn't put that sentence out there with some modification. Micky's has possibly the largest dessert menu I have ever seen. I think their range of sweets rivals even boutique chocolate stores like Haigh's. One entire page is devoted to sundaes. They also offer an alcoholic milkshake called Toblerone. It's made with cream and drizzled with chocolate fudge. They offer pop rocks as an extra, for crying out loud. I had a hard time steering away from the sweets on offer, but I gritted my teeth and did it.[BREAK]
The full menu is extensive. On offer are a huge range of breakfast and dinner options, from eggs on toast to salads, burgers, pizzas, pastas and a whole page of Mexican offerings. I stick to the breakfast menu and order the rolled-oat muesli. I was expecting to be disappointed with my boring choice. The table of women to my left were in celebration mode and have chosen to treat themselves to pizzas and Tex Mex. When my oaty concoction arrives it's not the horse-feed I'm expecting but a kind of fruit salad that's been garnished with yoghurt and oats. It stands proud in a glass bowl. It's a little bit beautiful.Micky's is the kind of place that doesn't promise fancy but somehow delivers. It's a down-to-earth kids wonderland of a place. I will definitely be going back there.
