Michel's Patisserie in Melbourne Central is just one of many places competing for city workers' morning coffee. But these guys have one serious advantage: cake. Mud cakes, sponge cakes, cheesecakes, tarts, cupcakes – you name it – if they haven't got something on display, they could probably order it in for you. Special occasions are their specialty. They have savoury stuff too (e.g. pies, quiches and breads).

But I'm really only in it for the coffee. You wouldn't necessarily think of Michel's as a great coffee place, but in 2011, Michel Patisserie were awarded Coffee Shop of the Year by Roy Morgan Research . I've found that the quality varies not only from Michel's store to Michel's store, but also throughout the day at this one.
