Escape the busy streets to enjoy coffee and cake
Michel's Patisserie is tucked away in the Target shopping complex situated on the corner of High Street and Calton Road, Gawler.
Entry to the undercover parking and store front is off High Street. The venue is quiet and relaxed, located slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the Gawler Murray Street and "central" shopping centres.
This makes it relaxing and was one of the reasons I sought it out the other day for a quiet snack. The complex also boasts its own toilets, which is very convenient as from many shops in Gawler, you find yourself having to return to the toilet block down by the river.
Michel's have a coffee and cake of the day deal for around $6.90 which I usually check. When the cake of the day is something that appeals I get this. Often the cake of the day is a sponge, occasionally it is Black Forest Cake, and also occasionally, it is Banana Crème Caramel Pie.
I was pleased to see that the cake of the day was a traditional sponge layered with raspberry jam and covered with soft pink icing. It reminded me of the days when I was a child and my mother used to bring a birthday cake home from the city. We added a few candles and immediate family only gathered around to sing Happy Birthday and blow out the candles. (So much simpler than birthday's nowadays, and very satisfying at the time.)
Michel's are famous for their cakes, but they also serve pies, pasties and sausage rolls. These are fresh and hot, just ideal for a light meal. They will make sandwiches and toasties to order and stock a range of buns and rolls.
Michel's cappuccino are rich and smooth with froth and powder on top. I recommend ordering a mug to enjoy with your meal if you have not already ordered the coffee and cake deal.
Michel's also ice and decorate cakes for birthdays and special occasions. These cakes usually have to be ordered in advance to ensure satisfaction. If you just go in and check at the last minute, you might be lucky that they have a cake made up, which is convenient in an emergency, but you will not have their full range to choose from.
