Michael Shafar: 50/50 - Adelaide Fringe Review

Michael Shafar appeared in the Adelaide Fringe performance of his show 50/50 for around 50 people last night at The Piglet at Gluttony. The Piglet is a small and intimate air-conditioned tent designed for one person shows.

50/50 is a stand-up comedy show about Michael's experiences of beating cancer. His delivery is warm and engaging and the audience is made to feel at ease from the get-go. One quickly realises that his show isn't designed around pity or sermonising, but rather is a self-deprecating, brave and sometimes reckless delivery of personal anecdotes, insights and opinions about himself, the people around him, and the journey they share.

As he goes through treatments and the sometimes funny, sometimes excruciating social interactions while being treated, his rather peculiar kind of cancer offers unique opportunities for comedy and risque anecdotes.

Michael's extensive stand-up comedy experience and his role as a writer for The Project are on display and he had quite a few audience members were laughing hard from the very beginning. Michael is clearly comfortable in discussing his cancer and the issues around it, removing the stigma that can surround cancer and its survivors.

All up, it's a show worth seeing for its unique take on a serious issue. Michael wouldn't want me to call him brave for doing so, but I reserve the right to run a marathon in his honour.

Michael Shafar performs his show at 7.20pm at The Piglet at Gluttony until February 24th. Tickets are $20 - $25, and are available here .
