Brisbanites from all quarters are quite familiar with Cleveland's iconic Grand View Hotel. Built in 1851, it is the oldest licensed hotel in Queensland and remains an imposing figure with its magnificent views over Moreton Bay. All year round, the beer garden, with its North Stradbroke Island backdrop, is a magnet for both locals and visitors.

The Grand View Hotel has earned a reputation in recent years for its support of the arts. Their Literary Lunches and Dinners are extremely popular, with many attendees driving the 30 minutes to Cleveland from the city.

I was excited to discover that Australian-born, internationally published crime fiction writer, Michael Robotham, will be presenting at the Grand View on Friday, 29th of June.

Robotham's novels have been shortlisted for numerous awards including the UK Gold Dagger and US Edgar Award. Four of Michael's 'Joe O'Loughlin novels' have been turned into TV movies in Germany and an English language TV series is in development. His standalone novels Life or Death and The Secret She Keeps have also been optioned for film and TV projects in the US and UK.

As part of the event, the author will be discussing his latest release, The Other Wife, which again features Joe O'Laughlin. Never heard of Joe? He is a fascinating character: a Clinical Psychologist battling Parkinson's disease with a plethora of his own problems. Love him to death!

The price for lunch is $40.00 for Members and $45.00 for Non-Members. All tickets include a two-course meal.

Reservations are essential and you can book by phone on 07 3884 3000 or email [email protected]. For further information, go here.

The Grand View Hotel is located at 49 North Street, Cleveland and the function commences at noon, finishing at 2:30pm. There is ample off street parking behind the hotel, as well as on-street parking out front. Cleveland Railway Station is a 25-minute walk from the Grand View and is quite achievable, though a taxi may be the easier option.

Do you have to purchase the author's book on the day? No, not at all. Although these events are a marketing tool I have always found the authors to be extremely interested and generous in sharing their love of storytelling.

Having said that, I have purchased the odd book and had it signed by the author as a gift for a good friend. Or sometimes for a friend who will in turn gift it to me!
