For authentic Peruvian cuisine in Melbourne, head to Mi Peru D'Carmen in Parkdale. The acquaint family-run restaurant, decorated with Aztec tablecloths and wall hanging photos and paintings of Peruvian sights will have you thinking you are in a restaurant in Cusco.

A changing menu offers a variety of traditional dishes such as tamals and empanada for entrée, mains mostly meat based with two or three vegetarian options, and a choice of four desserts. If you are unsure what to order, the waiter (Carmen's son) is happy to offer recommendations, explaining the origins of the dish.

We chose the Papa a la Huancaina for entrée. A cold and light dish of sliced potatoes, hardboiled egg, black olives, smothered in Huancaina sauce akin to hollandaise. For mains, the seafood stew from the specials menu. This fragrant tomato based stew with prawns, mussels, calamari and fish, with a subtle smoky flavour from the ceramic pot in which it is made, accompanied with steamed rice, is highly recommended.

Though full from the first two courses, we were curious to sample Peruvian desserts, so selected two to share. First, Picarones - four warm sweet potato doughnuts sweetened by a coating of homemade fig leaf syrup – ideal for those with a mild sweet tooth and for sharing. The second dessert, Suspiro a la Limena, we spotted being served to another table of diners. Served in a martini glass, this was by far my favourite part of the meal. A light and fluffy meringue, with caramel sauce and a sprinkling of cinnamon, atop a thick vanilla-bean custard. Light, and refreshing, this is a must order and a perfect end to any meal.

Besides the exceptional food, Mi Peru D' Carmen gets points for warm and welcoming service, including Carmen visiting each table to ensure the satisfaction of her diners, happily revealing secret recipes and posing for photos when asked.

A short walk from Parkdale station, Mi Peru D' Carmen has got to be Parkdale's best-kept secret. Book in advance for a meal experience you will return for.
