When Mi Corazon Tequila Bar and Cantina opened in late 2006 on Lygon Street in East Brunswick, it was Victoria's first dedicated tequila bar. Boasting a drinks menu comprising of more than 100 tequilas and a traditional Mexican kitchen menu, Mi Corazon aims to bring a better understanding and love of tequila to Melburnians.

With Mexican classics ranging from nachos to tacos, taquitos to tostadas, the food menu will delight in its authentic Mexican taste. Try the Pollo Con Salsa Mole (chicken with Mole sauce), which contains strips of chicken breast covered in mole, a traditional salsa made with chocolate, chilli and eight other nuts and spices. Another delicious menu choice is the Tacos al Pastor (Achiote-marinated Pork Tacos), which are corn tortillas filled with grilled pork marinated in achiote (a traditional marinade from the Yucatan), garnished with onion, coriander and pineapple and served with spicy homemade salsa and lime. The marinades and homemade salsas are exquisite and are probably the closest you can get to a taste of Mexico in this country.

But the real pulling power of Mi Corazon undoubtedly comes from its range of tequilas. As the bartender will tell you, the first rule of tequila is if it doesn't say "100% Agave" on the bottle then it isn't pure tequila. Tequila is produced from the heart of a plant called the blue agave, which is actually a succulent, not a cactus. The plant is grown to maturity for 8-12 years before harvest and can be used to make tequila within only 5 states in Mexico. The heart of the agave is chopped up and cooked and as it cooks the juices ferment. These juices are then distilled and the product is a pure 100% agave tequila.

My trip to Mi Corazon was therefore a learning experience as well as a night out (although after a few tequilas, whatever I learned from the bartender probably went in one ear and out the other). Another authentic touch was the traditional 'chaser' they offer you as a complimentary drink with each tequila - Sangrita. This is a traditional non-alcoholic Mexican chaser made with tomato, orange juice, lime juice, onion and chilli.

So if you're looking for a fun, new place to try on your next night out on the town, look no further than Mi Corazon on Lygon Street, especially if you have a love of Mexican food or tequila. The food from the kitchen is delicious and authentic, and the range of tequila will simultaneously astound and delight you. Mi Corazon translates to "my heart", and this place will certainly capture your heart and have you coming back for more.
