It's easy to make your own tasty Mexican dishes, especially with the popular do-it-at-home kits that are available at the supermarket. With a little bit of clever marketing and a reduced preparation time thanks to these pre-packaged dinners, Mexican food has become one of the easiest and fastest international cuisines to prepare at home.

But what if you're in the mood for some authentic Mexican food from a venue that prides itself on its flavoursome meals? What if your taste buds are craving something more than nachos, burritos and tacos? If you live in or near Geelong (or even if you're just passing through), Mexicali Mama is the place to go if you want to sample a quality Mexican meal. Located on Moorabool Street (directly opposite Simonds Stadium), this larger-than-it-appears establishment caters to a wide variety of tastes, whether you prefer your food mild or with a spicy kick. On first arriving at this restaurant, you may be deceived by the size of the building. While in the entranceway it looks like a small, two room restaurant with the payment counter and well-stocked bar next door, there are actually two more rooms attached which can seat large groups of people. These rooms are decorated in a traditional Mexican manner- the walls are painted in clay and white, decorative Native-style panelling runs around the room and various artworks adorn the walls (including paintings, fabric art, ponchos and rugs, and even a hanging piƱata). Polished wooden floorboards and ordinary wooden tables and chairs complete the look of a simple eatery, while little (fake) ball cacti on each table (in place of your average flower vase or candle) add a bit of Mexican flare.

The menu at Mexicali Mama is quite extensive, and includes your usual Mexican fare, including nachos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and tacos. They also serve chile con carne, their 'famous' Texas ribs, taquitos, a Mexican version of a chicken parmigiana, quesadillas, salads, and a variety of sides. Many of the meals come in either chicken or beef, and as mentioned earlier, there is a vegetarian selection of meals available. Some of the meals can also be modified for those who are unable to tolerate gluten, and these are indicated in the menu. is a child-friendly establishment, and their page-long children's menu is indicative of that. They are also fully licenced, and serve a large range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

If you're looking for a hearty and filling Mexican meal, Mexicali Mama is more than happy to oblige your gastronomic needs. The staff are extremely attentive, often coming to check whether you need a drink top-up or if your meal is satisfactory, the atmosphere is friendly, and the food is tasty and visually pleasing. There are several Mexican eateries in Geelong and its surrounding suburbs, but if you're looking for quality and expertise in the kitchen, you need look no further than Mexicali Mama.
