When the bustle of the inner north gets a bit much, there are plenty of green spaces nestled between the small lanes and terraced houses of Brunswick. The heritage listed is a small but well used and historically significant park located between Leinster Grove and Methven Street.


The highlight of this leafy sanctuary are the old elm trees (Ulmus procera) that line the original feature gravel walkway that cuts through the park. Trees of this huge size are rare, and are an inspiring reminder of the historical significance of the park. There are also several mature specimens of Canary Island date palms and a large sweet pittosporum hedge that lines the south side of the park.

The area was originally used as Methven Quarry, which was filled in by the council at the end of the last century. As one of the first established public parks in the Brunswick Area, was designed to connect with the surrounding residences. The local neighbourhood around the park retains a sense of the original industrial character with dozens of heritage listed houses on Jarvie Street and Methven Street. A few light industrial warehouses also operate from Mon-Sat at the north end of the park.

The park is well cared for by the Moreland Council and the benches have recently been updated to a beautiful raw timber. The two plate public BBQ and seating area are frequently used in nicer weather. The playground is long due for a face-lift, but work is planned to commence on a new play area soon.
