For a lot of kids (and adults too), church is the very last place they want to be on a Sunday. Unfortunately, a lot of church services aren't particularly appealing or accommodating to families with children. Little ones who are noisy and restless during the service can be frowned upon. And as a parent, you spend most of the service trying to keep your little ones quiet so as not to disrupt the other adults around you.
Messy Church is a place for the whole family to be involved, including parents. It is not Sunday School or Bible study or a kids' club. It is a church designed for families of all ages where the service is unique. At Messy Church, you explore faith through hands on creative crafts, games, sharing a meal together, and celebrating through story, song and prayer.
The idea of Messy Church started in the UK in 2004 and has grown and spread all around the world and to many Christian denominations. St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Forrest holds Messy Church once a month in the church hall. Each month a different theme is explored.
My little boy loves coming to Messy Church and looks forward to it every month. As for me, I've found Messy Church to be a fun, warm, welcoming place where it's okay to be noisy and loud and messy.
Lucy Moore, one of the founders of the first Messy Church in the UK, has summed it all up very nicely: "The Church has an image problem in that we sometimes communicate a slightly pious and judgmental 'you must be perfect to approach God' message. Think of the number of families who have been told to 'behave better' in church services. But Messy Church says we're all messy, our lives aren't perfect, our families and children aren't perfect and we believe the best space for God to deal with us in our messiness and disorder is in church. Come and join us."
The next Messy Church at St Andrews will be held on Wednesday, July 18 from 4.00pm-6.00pm. And the theme is: Christmas in July. So wear your daggy Christmas jumper and be ready for all things Christmassy.
This event is FREE and is guaranteed to be a fun night for the whole family. St Andrew's Presbyterian Church is located at 1 State Circle, Forrest. For more information about Messy Church, contact 0437 206 267 or visit the website here.
