A Chinese restaurant was at this location at Crown Melbourne previously, and with the recent renovations comes Merrywell . It is easy to get slightly intrigued as to what Merrywell is all about. I see it passing through on the tram to the city nearly all the time. It can be a catchy name, and upon further observation this interesting establishment is a pub food American burger like joint at lunch time, and becomes a funky restaurant and functions area at night.

One of my girlfriends and I recently decided to check this establishment out. This particular friend of mine, the Urbanspoon freak that she is decided to show pictures of items of what she wanted for lunch on her iPhone, and just like me, she ended up ordering a KISS burger ($12) instead.



Definitely feels like an American eatery where diner meets laid back pub. The burgers were quite dry yet rather saucy. Despite the significance of the sauce, it was easy to add more sauce to the burgers. I was in the mood (it was a cold, Saturday afternoon) for chips, yet my friend decided not to come to the party in the chip department.

It was easy to become quite thirsty here. I opted for the Lemon, Lime and Bitters ($3.50) and the drink was either too lemony, or a bit on the bitter side. It wasn't too bad, although I have had better elsewhere. The drink was finished before my burger. I was still thirsty. Next time it might be a good idea to opt for some natural H2O in tandem with some drink to get you through the burgerlicious experience. And in the drinks department, this is where my friend went crazy (well almost) opting for a Vanilla Coke Spider ($8) that was a bit on the weird side. Different and wacky. The taste was too insane and scary. Never taking that risk again.

Good ambience, laid back and chilled. The service was pretty ordinary and the staff weren't overly that self confident. This was a pity. Maybe because this is a newly opened establishment, not too sure. Quite ordinary service. The burger acid test: I will be back. Get in and get out. A great pre (or post) DFO South Wharf or exhibition centre seminar attendee pit stop. Or if you don't care where you eat, provided you want a filling feed, and perhaps you might be finding Grill'd a little too overrated on such an occasion -then you too, welcome to the Merrywell.
