A sunny new face on Melbourne's cupcake scene, Merry Cupcakes brings healthier-recipe vegan cupcakes to Brunswick Street. Merry Cupcakes was conceived by nutritionist and dietitian Mary, who decided to combine her love of cupcakes with her healthy inclinations. The result is a gorgeous cupcake shop offering a healthier choice to the discerning cupcake lovers of Melbourne.
How are Merry Cupcakes healthier than the average cupcake? Well, Mary's recipes focus on having less saturated fat, less sugar, and more fibre. To do this, the recipes use nut oil and soymilk to replace dairy, and add extra fruit and sweet vegetables to increase the fibre and replace the refined sugar content. That being said, the taste is still an equal priority! The question is, do healthy cupcakes taste as good as regular, naughtier cupcakes?
My associate guinea pig (read: husband, who doesn't have food allergies) tested this for me, because sadly, there are only gluten free cupcakes on Fridays and Saturdays, and this coeliac visited on the wrong day.
My hubby went for the "Charlie Brown", a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing. He said it was light and fluffy, with fantastic density. The flavours were excellent, and the icing worked perfectly with the cupcake flavour.
I thought they might be less sweet than normal cupcakes, but he said the sweetness was just the right level. If he hadn't known it was vegan and healthier, he wouldn't have noticed a difference. To him, it tasted like a regular cupcake in terms of sweetness, and was satisfyingly delicious.
The flavour range is based on seasonally available ingredients, so it changes over time. Look out for the names of every cupcake, because they're all fun. For example, the beetroot red velvet cupcake is called "Beet It".
The atmosphere is fun and friendly, and Mary is onsite to answer any questions about her cupcakes. The shop also offers a great range of drinks to enhance your cupcake experience. Or, if you're like me, so you enjoy something yummy on a non GF day. For me, I had a peanut butter iced chocolate, which was delicious. I'm going back soon for another one, with a GF cupcake!
I love the concept of improving the recipe of cupcakes to make them a healthier treat, and respect any business with a goal of offering healthy alternatives while also giving the sweet fixes we crave. Good work, Merry Cupcakes!
