Experience a new way of swimming
Children are spoilt for choice in Sydney during the school holidays and an interesting one day workshop I came across is all about mermaids. Run by No Ripples, a mermaid school, your child can enjoy a range of activities and learning around and in the ocean pool at Coogee.
Held at Wylie's Baths, nestled between Grant and Trenerry Reserves, qualified and experienced instructors ensure safety is at the foremost of each class. Children will learn ocean safety observing tides, rips and currents as well as mermaid techniques in propelling oneself through the water. There is no teaching of the holding of breaths for extended periods.
On land, they will first start with getting to know each other games and later try mermaid yoga, make ocean jewellery and be transformed into magical mermaids with mermaid hair and makeup full of colour and sparkle.
Suitable for ages 7-14years, this workshop requires participants to be confident swimmers with an ability to swim 25metres unassisted and have a medium fitness level. It's on 2 days, 16 and 25 April, at a cost of $120 per child. If you have more than one child or friends interested then book in together as there are savings in doing so.
The cost includes entry to the baths, free hire of a mermaid fin, all activities, a certificate on completion and a complimentary silicon wristband 'I am a Mermaid'. There are no drop ins. Bookings must be made online, prior to attending. Each class has a maximum of 10 mermaids, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Classes begin at 9am and conclude at 3pm. You should bring comfortable clothes, swimmers, goggles, towel, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, snacks for morning tea and some lunch for this unforgettable day of fun in the sun.
This range of nature-based and fun water activities is designed to nurture a sense of exploration and caring for the ocean. Mermaiding has become popular across Europe and the United States for both young and old, and provides a myriad of benefits. It is great exercise and gives a total body workout, relieves stress, is a fun alternative to regular swimming, allows you to meet new like-minded people, and is liberating and exhilarating as you explore your body and mind.
