Merlo's celebrated Bean of the Month program continues with the iconic Queensland-headquartered coffee company brewing a rare Tanzanian bean from the Shiwanda Estate. From the 1st to 31st of March 2016, Merlo, Australia's largest independently owned and operated coffee roaster, will showcase the Tanzanian Arabica bean though its famous 'Bean of the Month' program, available at Merlo's 14 stores across Brisbane, Melbourne and online.
One of the pillars of the Bean of the Month program is supporting the local community of origin of the bean, as 90% of coffee producers are smallholder farmers. The Tanzanian Arabica bean comes from the Shiwanda Estate, a historic area that was revived in 1998 and is located in the Mbeya Region of Southern Tanzania, between Lake Tanganyika to the north and Lake Malawi to the south.
Grown at over 1500m above sea level and across 300 acres, the Tanzanian bean is naturally processed and washed, producing a taste that is dark chocolate with orange and lemon notes, and fragranced with chocolate and apple. The acidity is lively and tangerine with a full, syrupy body. Beans can be purchased wholesale with prices starting at $11.25 for 200g and up to $41.50 for 1kg. Coffee lovers will have to be quick to sample the smooth brew in store or at home however, as the Bean of the Month is famous for selling out before the month is up due to popularity.
