You cannot espresso how much you mean to me - I'm talking to you, coffee!
Merlo has stores in four different locations across Brisbane; two in the City (239 George St and 344 Queen St), one in South Bank (66 Ernest St) and one at the University of Queensland - St Lucia campus (Duhig Building, UQ St Lucia Campus, Campbell Rd). I was lucky enough to be invited to try out the new menu at Merlo Coffee at their South Brisbane location. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available in the spacious cafe, complete with a relaxing ambience that will ensure a pleasant visit by all.

Merlo Coffee has exciting news: they have a new breakfast and lunch menu available that will work in close partnership with Merlo's award winning coffee - now that's a meal well worth the calories! The new menu has been designed with Queensland flavours in mind, and includes healthy, fresh dishes perfect for mid-week breakfasts and/or lunches. For breakfast, choose from a range of smoothies and toasts, fresh fruit and bircher mueslis. Or how about something a little more special, such as the two egg burrito, or smashed avocado on sourdough topped with feta, chilli, and mint? For lunch, highlights include the corn fritter stack, the hickory smoked pulled pork burger, and the New York style Reuben sandwich - is anyone else salivating just from reading this? Or perhaps the Buddha Bowl, the dish leading the charge of new menus at Merlo Coffee at its four locations in Brisbane - "it's the perfect summer salad and culinary antidote to the Queensland heat."

We were greeted warmly by Michelle and her staff - we were allowed ample time to choose what we wanted to order. Between two people (and two dogs), we opted for the 'smashed avocado with sourdough' (topped with feta, chilli and mint) and the 'two egg breakfast burrito' (bacon, scrambled eggs, a hash brown, spinach, cheddar, and spicy chipotle sauce (mild) rolled up in a soft tortilla; served with a side of tomato relish). Merlo Coffee was able to cater to my dietary requirements of having the eggs served without the yolk, which was much appreciated, thank you! Michelle was even kind enough to check whether I was able to eat mayonnaise or whether they should substitute it for another sauce. Drinks wise, we opted for a mango smoothie and an iced chocolate.
I cannot even begin to describe how good the food was - the avocado was creamy, buttery, and smooth, in perfect contrast to the lightly toasted sourdough in terms of texture. Topped with feta, chilli, and mint, this dish literally makes your taste buds swoon with happiness - there is so much going on in terms of flavour, but not too much such that they're working overtime! As for the breakfast burrito, although it may look like your average burrito both in regards to size and appearance, this burrito was very filling, which is to be expected considering how many different ingredients are included. Again, the breakfast burrito has just the right amount of flavour going on for your taste buds to relish and enjoy, and really is a "hearty start to the day" as Merlo claims!
