[ADVERT]Tucked away on the far south coast of NSW is the beautiful little town of Merimbula. The town itself is your typical little coastal tourist spot with more than enough shops lining both sides of the steep main street, which keep the bargain hunters happy. The nearby beaches are pristine gorgeous postcard perfect spots. Even on a cold windy day, you still feel compelled to take your shoes off and walk for hours along the sand.

One place I can highly recommend to stay is the Merimbula Beach Cabins . Along with the usual cabin-style accommodation, this place has unique little pentagonal shaped cabins, both studio style for two people or 2 bedroom style for a family. Inside, they're like little igloos and are geared up with all the sheets, cutlery, crockery and cookware.

Couple that with sweeping views of Short Point Beach, a brisk sea breeze and outside tables to sit at, and you have the perfect little place to stay. Another bonus is the local rainbow lorikeets who are quite tame and will come and sit on your hand and peck away at the birdseed available for sale from reception. This was a big highlight for my kids and they looked forward to it every day of our stay.
Our stay was in mid-November 2011, which coincided with the annual migration of humpback whales along the south coast. From the front porch of our little cabin, we watched with delight as two juvenile humpbacks frolicked in the bay at Short Point Beach. It's things like that which make your holiday memorable. Whales migrate from mid-August to early December.

I can also recommend the Whale Watching Cruise run by the Merimbula Marina . We powered out to sea in search of those elusive majestic whales and found three of them, which we watched and followed from a respectable distance. When one of those immense creatures silently appeared under the boat, an eerie silence fell and everyone breathed a bit easier when the whale came up for air again, some meters away.

Another great holiday moment.

There are ample take away food shops, cafes, restaurants and eateries in town, and I've already mentioned the great range of other shops. But the thing that shines most brightly in Merimbula is what nature has provided.

If you're heading down the south coast of NSW, make sure you add Merimbula to your itinerary and stop there for a few days. It'll do you good.
