Myth or Fact?*

Breast feeding burns up calories (up to 600 per day)?

Breast milk can be used to soothe sore nipples and breasts?

Breast feeding enables earlier introduction to solids?

Breast fed babies typically get sick less?

Believe it or not these are all true! I guess this is part of the substantiation of the old saying 'Breast is best'. But not all babies can get the benefits of breast milk and that's where The Breastmilk Bank comes into play.

Mother's milk banks operate throughout the world. This is a donation program with a difference! It's like an exclusive club because not everyone is eligible, but who can resist the idea?

The Breastmilk Bank's very important job is to pasteurise and store donated milk for babies whose mothers can't supply milk. Its worthy recipients are sick and premature babies. The Mercy Health Breastmilk Bank collects the milk from mothers who have recently given birth but it's an expensive operation that needs support.

The Mercy Health Foundation is trying to raise funds to set up a permanent endowment fund for the breastmilk fund. To find out how you can help click here.
