When you enter a café and they take your name for the waiting list and direct you to a waiting area, you know that it has to be good. Some patrons were so desperate for their Merchants fix that they dined at the outdoor tables despite it being a rainy day. Merchants Guild is a sizable place, but so popular that their many tables struggle to accommodate hungry customers. When we finally were seated, it was on a large group table packed with other diners.

The Centre Road, Bentleigh East shopping strip, with its smattering of restaurants and lack of shopping opportunities, is the poor cousin to the Centre Road, Bentleigh shopping strip. The shops tend to be of an older character to those of Centre Road's main shopping strip. But Merchants Guild, last year's trendy new addition to the area, has made the Bentleigh East shopping strip worth going to.
Their menu consists almost entirely of breakfast-style dishes, many of which contain superfoods- they even offer a superfood breakfast containing a rainbow of trendy foods from pumpkin seed to kale.
I ordered the "short cut bacon with an avocado and charred corn salsa on sourdough with eggs and jalapeno pesto". The $18 meal was worth every cent. The bacon possibly the best bacon I've ever had; it wasn't too fatty or greasy, and was thick and meaty rather than crispy. The avocado mixed with corn gave was relief to the otherwise heavy meal. The jalapeno pesto was far too spicy for my tastes, but fortunately it was served on the side.
My friend ordered scrambled eggs with avocado. This wasn't listed on the menu, but they were happy enough to make it anyway.

The friendly character of the place, combined with the endlessly interesting dishes on offer, makes Merchants Guild worth a visit. Highly recommended, although I do suggest going at a quiet time so the wait for a table isn't too long.
