Tucked away at the back of Sunnybank Plaza, I stumbled upon this bar purely because the Formosa Asian Market next door has recently changed its entry and exit passages.

A self-service noodle bar, it took me a couple of visits to get the hang of the process. In hindsight, I probably should have looked at the website, which explains it all.

A cross between a food court and buffet, you'll need to queue, order and pay, as you do at an RSL - but cannot 'keep the seat' before this occurs.

1. Grab a tray. Order rice or noodle dish in S, M or L from the rice and noodle man. This starts from $3.99 for an udon broth or golden curry.

HOW TO MAPPEN:

2. Add your additional toppings from the bain marie - seafood or vegetable tempura, pancakes and more.

3. Select a salad from the salad fridge, such as seaweed or potato.

4. Choose a drink such as lychee tea or a coke.

5. As with nearly everywhere in Sunnybank, cash only!

Tables are 'retro' style, meaning an older fashioned timber counter and bench seating, both indoors and out. Patrons eat quickly and, after eating, bus their own trays back to the kitchen.

"Mappen" translates as "one more time" in the Nagoya-dialect, meaning you'll be back again. And yes, from $3.99 for a small meal, it's worth serving yourself.
