Meningie is a small charming town located 149 km south-east of Adelaide on the shores of Lake Albert. It is a popular holiday spot with locals as well as tourists.

Right on the main street of the town, Princess Highway, is a very special Memorial Park. The park commemorates Australian servicemen and women who served in all wars and conflicts.

At the entrance to the park is a striking archway. Along the path to the garden are names of servicemen and women on red brick pavers who served in the Boer War, World War 1 and 2.

In the centre of the garden is a polished red granite memorial with an obelisk mounted on a two-tier pedestal and memorial red pavers in the shape of the cross. There are chairs to sit, reflect and honour.

A special monument in the park is an Avro Anson Memorial. This monument of an airplane engine, is in memory of all RAAF service men and women and the crew of RAAF Avro Anson No. W2370 which crashed into Lake Albert near Meningie on 3 June 1942.

There is also a Krupp field gun on display and some murals as tributes to indigenous servicemen.

A "Lone Pine" tree stands in the garden as a memorial to the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign, the Battle of Lone Pine. A plaque next to the tree explains its significance.

Next time, you are in the region do visit this special park to reflect and honour those who sacrificed for our freedom.
