but you can just call me Ray.
My life is full of great experiences, made better for sharing.
Nothing blue about these great bands
The Adelaide Blues and Roots Association are very active, and for the last couple of years have run a competition to send Adelaide artists to the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis in late January each year.
This year, the successful bands were popular pub duo Nikko and Snooks and the amazingly talented The Associates, featuring Matt Williams on Guitars. They were joined for a special farewell concert at the Gov by the incomparable Evan Whetter and his band Lazy Eye.
You will catch all three bands during the Fringe Season somewhere or other. Search the fringe site for dates.
It was a privilege to hear these great Adelaide blues outfits at their best and all in one night for a very modest $30 ticket. It was my first experience of Evan and his command of the Hammon B3 organ. Pure wizardry.
I am a long time fan of Nikko (Nick Kapridis "The Streamliners") and Snooks (Snooks La Vie formerly with the "Hiptones")
And the smooth and original blues tunes from The Associates left me unsurprised that they are making a significant impact on the National Blues charts.
All reports indicate the bands had a great on the Memphis pilgrimage managing to take in some other cities and venues on their trip. While none made the finals, their albums received a hot response from appreciative audiences.
If you are a blues performer and are interested in next year's challenge, applications close this coming Friday, with heats held from June this year. You can get more information from the Adelaide Blues and Roots Association.
