The hills are alive this November as the Melville Theatre Company brings the timeless musical
The Sound of Music to life at the Main Hall of the Melville Civic Centre.
Running from 15-30 November, this production promises to enchant audiences with its unforgettable songs, heartwarming story, and talented cast.
Hannah Charlotte will be playing the iconic role of Maria
Based on the true story of the Von Trapp family,
The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Set against the backdrop of Austria on the brink of World War II, the musical follows Maria, a spirited young woman who becomes governess to the seven children of Captain Georg Von Trapp. As she brings music and joy back into their lives, Maria and the family must also navigate the growing dangers of the Nazi regime.
Featuring classic songs such as
Do-Re-Mi,
My Favourite Things, and
Climb Ev'ry Mountain, this heartwarming tale of love, courage, and family has captivated audiences worldwide for over 60 years.
Director Neroli Sweetman, who has a personal connection to the show, is thrilled to be leading this production.
Forty years ago, I played Maria in a production of The Sound of Music with Melville Theatre Company at this very venue, Neroli reminisced.
It felt like the perfect moment to bring this beautiful show back to Melville. The story is timeless, the music is beautiful, and it continues to touch hearts, no matter the era.
Hannah Charlotte as Maria with the Von Trapp children
Sweetman’s passion for the show shines through in her direction, though she is careful to let the actors create their own interpretations.
While my experience informs my direction, I’ve made sure not to impose my portrayal of Maria onto our wonderful lead. Hannah Charlotte is doing an amazing job, with an incredible voice and presence that truly brings Maria to life.
For Hannah, stepping into the role of Maria is a dream come true.
This was one of the first musicals I watched as a child, and I always wanted to be part of it. I even played Liesl in a previous production, so to now play Maria feels like a full-circle moment for me.
When asked what she sees of herself in the character, Hannah shared,
Maria has so much love to give, but often doesn’t know where to direct it. I relate to that, and I’m also a huge family person, just like her. It’s been amazing to work with the children in the show - they’re so talented, and I’ve wanted to take them all home with me!
Audiences can expect a production filled with genuine warmth and connection, not only between the characters but also among the cast.
We’ve become like a big family, and I think that love is really going to show on stage, Hannah added.
With a talented ensemble, iconic songs, and a production team dedicated to delivering an unforgettable experience, this staging of
The Sound of Music s sure to be a must-see event this November.
The Sound of Music plays at 7:30pm November 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 and 30, and 5pm November 17 and 24. Ticket pricing $25-$30. Book
