Fans of queer arts and culture are in for a good time in February, as the inaugural
Melt brings shows that appeal to the wide spectrum of the queer community to the Brisbane Powerhouse stages.
From the 5th to the 15th of February, a host of acts – comedy, cabaret, theatre, music, art and more – all curated by Festival Director James Lees, will be on offer.
will occur alongside the
16th annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival, meaning audiences will have almost 40 different shows, events and films to enjoy. Plus there's all the glitz and fun of the
Melt Opening Night Party which promises to be the "hottest opening night in town…and best of all, it's free".
Melt Festival director James Lees says, "I am so happy about the number of shows we are bringing to Brisbane for the very first time, including
Confessions of a Grindr Addict, Matthew Mitcham's
Twists and Turns and Jeff Duff's
Bowie Unzipped. Other highlights include the
Brisbane Pride Festival Comedy Gala, Vulcana Women's Circus'
Ladies Lounge Cabaret, Ruth Gardner's world premier
Ruth: The Musical and one of this country's crown jewels, the legendary Paul Capsis."
Brisbane Queer Film Festival Curator Shannon King says, "These films illustrate the strength and diversity in our community and our ongoing pursuit for equality and visibility. The festival opens with the remarkable award-winning feature
The Way He Looks, which has garnered critical acclaim for the worldwide festival circuits".
Parking in and around the venue can be problematic, especially when there's a festival on, so if you can, try to take public transport or car pool to avoid that pre-show parking frustration.
Don't make the mistake of thinking
Melt is only open to the LGBTIQ community. Friends, family and lovers of great cultural events are always welcome to attend too. Just bring an open heart and an open mind.
