It's coming to the end of winter – thank goodness! I can think of no better way to welcome in the upcoming spring season than with a visit the floral extravaganza at this year's / Victorian International Orchid Fair. Now in its fourth year, it bursts into brilliant bloom from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd of August at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough.

Not just for orchid enthusiasts, this event showcases clivias, iris, bromeliads, carnivorous plants and other specialist plants. There are books and garden accessories for sale too. The event attracts orchid societies, growers and sellers from all over Australia and overseas.

You can browse or buy an amazing array of both well-known and rare orchid varieties, such as the 'Upside Down Orchid' and members of the orchid royal family.

Four well-known international speakers will be presenting at a seminar of the Saturday, so get in quick before tickets sell out. It's $50, which includes entry to the fair. Topics, like 'My Favourite Orchids of Africa & Madagascar', sound absolutely fascinating.

Many gardeners shy away from growing orchids, worried that they are difficult to grow. While some varieties require some special care and attention, others almost take care of themselves. On-hand demonstrations and expert advice from those in the know will make it all the easier.

Whether avid orchid lover or not, an outing with the family while enjoying the wonders of nature and the latest innovations in the world of gardening makes a great day out.

So, why else go to an orchid fair? Orchids, due to their adaptability, comprise the largest flowering plant species on earth. That's no mean feat. There are basically two main types: terrestrial, those living in soil, of which Australia boasts a wonderful array; and epiphytic, those living attached to a host, be it a tree, rock or cliff face.
