Go into the city on a Sunday morning and you'll see it's just different. Instead of suited up workers pushing past each other on the street and lines spilling out of coffee shops, you'll find peace with not a hurried person in sight. Sundays are the universal lazy day.

This presents just one problem: often, the place you'd been planning on going on your day off is not even open or has limited hours on a Sunday. However, there are plenty of interesting places to go which spring to life on the last day of the week- with historic houses and model railways being some of the best.

Historic houses are often open on Sundays. Labassa , a mansion located in Melbourne's south-east, welcomes visitors on the third Sunday of each month, with tours of the interior and exterior run in the afternoon. Admission is $8, or $5.50 concession.
The heritage listed and ghost inhabited Black Rock House in the bayside suburbs is open every Sunday afternoon, and best of all, tours are free.

Riding a miniature railway is another fun option which is often only available on Sundays. The Altona Miniature Railway , which runs every third Sunday with trains departing between 11am and 4pm. Each ride costs $2.50. Then there's the adorable Diamond Valley Railway , which runs from 11am until 5pm every Sunday. A ride costs $3, and kids under two ride free.



Few things go better with a relaxing Sunday than a picnic. Many historic houses allow picnics to be held in their gardens, and model railway sites not only allow picnics, they usually provide picnic tables and barbecue facilities as well.
