Never mind the best sights of Melbourne. I'm a bit of a scent person myself, and if I follow my nose it takes me into wonderful bakeries, beautiful paper shops redolent of another era, frangrant spas, heady flowershops and beyond. We think of the city as full of stink and noise, pollution and grime, but actually, if you know where to look (sniff), you'll find some incredible aromas right under your nose.... Here are some of my favourite olfactory delights:

Anywhere in the Dandenongs, just after it has rained - probably my no. 1 sensory delight - the tangy smell of eucalypts, walking through the Australian bush. Try Sherbrooke Forest, or the Emerald to Cockatoo Walking Trail .

J Gronow's old wood yard in Inkerman Street, St Kilda East - especially just after they have had a delivery or have been chopping up the redgum, ready for stacking - a smell redolent of country fires and frosty mornings.

Rustica Sourdough Bakery , early mornings (Brunswick Street, Fitzroy) - forget the 'piped' baking scent of chain bakeries, the real thing will get your nerves tingling, and there's something about the piquant smell of sourdough which makes your mouth water. Especially the fruit and pumpkin bloomers here which are worth a trek across town.

The Royal Botanic Gardens , just after they have mown - who doesn't love the smell of fresh cut grass?! If you can't make it to the gardens, try any local park - you just need to stalk your local council mower man to find out when he's going through!

Any of the bayside beaches, just before a storm, when the smell of salt and thunderstorms are heavy in the air. My favourite is beneath the cliffs at Half Moon Bay.

And finally, for me, an authentic Melbourne moment: the smell of coffee roasting at The Coffee Company in Carlisle Street, Balaclava. Weirdly enough, while I can't stand the taste of coffee - I absolutely love the smell wafting through our streets in the morning.

What about you - do you have any favourite smells in Melbourne which set your nose tingling? Anywhere you would recommend those of us driven by our noses to visit just for the scented adventure?**
