Food and words.

There is nothing quite like a glass of ice cold beer after a hard day, but beer connoisseurs know that beer is about far more that this. At beer houses across Melbourne beer is appreciated like a fine wine, and craft brews are popping up all over the place. We like the way they think, and as appreciators of great beer we've decided to look for Melbourne's best beer houses. We've got a couple of great ones, but we want your opinions.

James Squire is a popular Melbourne brew, and their Brewhouse can be found at the Docklands. You won't find a very varied list of beers here, but you'll be able to enjoy all of the James Squire beers. From their Amber Ale to their Brown Porter, these beers are full flavoured brews and you'll find a selection of tasty bar food, steaks, and parmas to accompany them. Another great place to check out is Little Creatures Dining Hall in Fitzroy. You'll be able to sample all of the Little Creatures beers in the friendly and relaxed setting.

If you want to sample a range of great beers then you should give Mrs Parma's a go. They have a huge range of Melbourne's great brews both on tap and in bottles. They source from some of the many great microbreweries around Melbourne. There is a real eclectic mix, and you can enjoy them alongside a tasty parma.

Beer DeLuxe is the ultimate destination if you want to sample a range of local and international beers. Their 9-page beer list handles everything including lager, ale, Belgian styles, and more. They stock all of Melbourne's best microbrewery beers, and have a range of international craft beers as well as some of the bigger names. For a truly unique range of beers you must also check out their reserve list. There is also a great range of food that goes well with the beers.

Where do you think we'll find Melbourne's best beer house. Does it need to contain a range of local and international brews, or do you like to sample one company's entire range. Should the beer be accompanied by great food, or does it all come down to the beer? Let us know your thoughts on Melbourne's best beer house.

I love the Royston in Richmond, constantly changing micro beers on tap and one of the best pub feeds in Melbourne.

Also just down the road is the Mountain Goat brewery, only open Fridays and Wednesdays serving their brews and pizzas in the actual brewing warehouse. Wednesdays they conduct tours of the brewing process.

A few beer people I know are talking about 'The Alehouse Project' at 98 Lygon St, Brunswick East but I haven't had a chance to visit yet.

The Belgium Beer Garden on St Kilda Road has a large range of imported beers. The place also features a large courtyard which is great in the summertime.

Young&Jacksons on Flinders Street has an extensive list of craft beers on tap, and unlike BeerDeLux etc they are not overpriced (around $9 for a premium pint). I think the best beer bar in Melbourne, without a doubt is The Local Taphouse in Balaclava. They have around 15 taps of really quality craft beers. It's a real beer nerds paradise, hard to get a seat at times though as it gets very busy. Another good venue is The Great Northern hotel in Brunswick. Again a large variety of Australian craft beers on tap, with 2 hand pumps (I think) for a traditional touch. There's plenty more beer venues in Melbourne, with more springing up, and many old pubs adding more and more craft beers to their tap line.

Want the most fantastic beer list ever? Work your way over to Josie Bones on Smith Street in Collingwood. The beer list is the size of a Tolstoy novel, and the food is delicious to boot!
