The (MWFF) returns for its seventh year in 2023. The festival showcases the work of Australian, Aotearoa New Zealand and Pasifika women and gender-diverse filmmakers.



In keeping with this year's theme, Connections, MWFF will explore creative collaborations with local and international filmmakers. This includes the MWFF partnership with Femme Frontera , a Latinx-led film organisation made up of and founded by, women and non-binary filmmakers from the US-Mexico border regions of Texas and Mexico. MWFF will screen Femme Frontera's 2022 showcase of short films, documentaries, narrative and animation. Tickets to the Femme Frontera International Shorts Showcase are $18/$12 and you can buy them here .

The 2023 MWFF Best Short award winner also gets the opportunity to screen at Femme Frontera's annual festival, in Texas.



Opening night (23rd February) features a screening of First Nations filmmaker, Jub Clerc's film Sweet As . Sweet As is a coming-of-age drama film inspired by Clerc's own experience and follows Murra, an Indigenous girl from a troubled family who discovers a passion for photography while participating in a youth retreat. Sweet As was awarded the Blackmagic Digital Australian Innovation Award at Melbourne International Film Festival in 2022. Tickets are $35/$30, which includes entry to the opening night after party. The screening is free to attend for all First Nations People.

There will also be a special screening of short documentary Imagined Touch which explores the collaboration of two deafblind performers Heather Lawson and Michelle Stevens, together with director Jodee Mundy, as they wrestle with the question - how do they perform if they can't see or hear on stage? - while engendering an understanding of what it is like to be deprived of sight and hearing. The screening will also include a panel talk with the filmmakers, focusing on Disability and connection through art practice. Tickets are $18/$14. Click here for tickets.

Other program highlights include Reel Shorts (25th February), a collection of captivating and uplifting documentaries that delve into true stories from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Moana. From intimate portraits of artists and sports icons to intercultural and intergenerational connections, these films offer diverse perspectives of the world around us. Tickets to Reel Shorts are $18/$14.



Closing night (27th February) features a screening of Kainga which debuted at New Zealand International Film Festival 2022 and features eight Pan-Asian Women female filmmakers' powerful anthology, illuminating the immigrant experience in Aotearoa, New Zealand through the lives of eight Asian women connected by the house they have all called home during different generations. Producer Kerry Warkia will be in attendance for closing night. Tickets are $25/$20, and you can buy them here .

The festival will once again host panel talks and discussions, co-presented by research partner, Monash University.
