In Australia, we don't often get the chance to experience the wonders of a northern hemisphere winter, but in August 2011, that's all about to change.
The
is set to transform the city into a winter wonderland, reminiscent of a European or North American winter – something most of us only dream of.
Get set to strap on some skates and test out your ice-skating prowess on one of Australia's largest outdoor skating rinks. Don't worry if skating isn't your thing, there's plenty to keep you busy (and safely on two feet).
If you're feeling a little less than adventurous, you might like to watch the pros in action, with some of Australia's best figure-skaters taking to the rink. Find more details
here .
Don't forget to take the opportunity to indulge in some
alpine treats , like traditional spiced mulled wine (Glühwein), hot chocolate, poffertjes (those delicious little dutch pancakes), bratwurst sausage, pretzels and more.
If you're looking for a place to kick back and relax (and perhaps warm up those toes after a spin around the ice), head over to the Alpine Ski Hut. Here, you'll find wood fires, delicious food and a full bar. Outside, the terrace is fully heated, and a great place to meet and mingle with friends.
Each night you can kick back and enjoy the Winter Festival
music program . Monday is Classic night, while on Thursday you can enjoy 'New German Wave'. Grab a drink and chill out on Friday with Euro Lounge, then on Saturday, fluff up your perm and don your best acid-wash jeans for Ice Sk80s Discotheque.
Tickets for the ice-skating sessions are already selling fast, so book now to avoid disappointment. Tickets are also cheaper online – ranging from $10 - $20 depending on the age of the skater and session you book. Each session lasts 45 minutes, and they run every hour, on the hour, from 12 noon until 9pm.
You can also book a range of
Ice-Rink packages , which combine a session on the ice with food, drinks and other goodies.
Other 'extras' available include the 'Bobby Skating Aid' for the littlies (the under 12 year olds) and Snowflakes Gift Tokens, which can be used for any purchases at the festival.
If you're not skating, entry to the Festival site is free, and you can purchase food and drink as you please.
Located outside the
Royal Exhibition Building , the Winter Festival lands August 18.
