The Winter Festival 2011 kicks off in Melbourne on Thursday the 18th of August and will run until Sunday the 4th of September. This three week event will see the city of Melbourne turn into a winter wonderland with an open air ice rink and a host of activities and events - here are some of the highlights of this forthcoming festival;

Free Ice Skating performances will take centre stage at the the Winter Festival 2011. Witness the magic and excitement of these events on Friday the 19th and Saturday the 20th at 6:50pm and 7:50pm and Sunday the 21st August at 5:50pm and 6:50pm.

The Alpine Ski Hut will allow Melburnians to relax and dine in a traditional mountain chalet. Here you will be able to try delicious European Winter offerings such as French crepes, Bavarian bratwurst, Dutch poffertjes, Swiss raclette as well as gluhwein and German biers. You can also warm up with a free Lipton Chai Latte at the nearby Lipton Chai Latte Lodge.

You can head out to the open air ice rink (hire or bring your own skates along) or watch the fun and excitement of the Ice Blitz Challenge. Another fun attraction is the Funtrack which is an ice path lined with majestic trees.

The festival program features daily events and activities, for example Monday nights have been renamed 'Classic Mondays' and from 6pm to10pm, the ice rink will feature classic pop tunes.

Thursday nights are more up tempo and will feature classic Neue Deutsche Welle - otherwise known as New German Wave tracks from 6pm to 10pm - think Nena, Klaus Nomi, Alphaville and Falco - Tres cool.

Chill out to the sounds of Thievery Corporation, Gare du Nord, Kruder & Dorfmeister and the like on Friday nights with Euro Lounge from 6pm to 10pm.

And Saturday nights will see the ice rink turn into a fun 80s discothèque from 6pm to 10pm.

All the events of the Winter Festival 2011 will be located between the Melbourne Museum and the Royal Exhibition Building and the festival will be open from 12pm until 10pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 11pm on Saturdays and 10am to10pm on Sundays.



Entry to the Winter Festival 2011 site is free, however some of the events and attractions are ticketed. There are quite a few ticketing options available, for example;

An Adult Weeknight Ticket (including skate hire) is priced at $28 and allows for a 45 minute ice rink session. Without skate hire an Adult Weeknight Ticket is priced at $22.

A Kids Weeknight Ticket (including skate hire) is priced at $19 and allows for a 45 minute ice rink session. Without skate hire a Kids Weeknight Ticket is priced at $18.

There are also Ice Rink Package deals, for example;

Ice Rink Warm Up is priced at $32.00 and entitles the ticket holder to a 45 minute ice skating session including skate hire, a hot chocolate and Winter Festival Ceramic Mug.

Veuve Clicquot Winter Special is priced at $52.00 and entitles the ticket holder to a 45 minute ice skating session including skate hire and a flute of Veuve Clicquot champagne.

Winter Romance is priced at $69 for two adults and entitles the ticket holders to a 45 minute ice skating session for 2 adults including skate hire, 2 Glühweins or other beverages and 2 Winter Festival Ceramic Mugs.

There are ticketing options suited to individuals, couples and families - to see all the ticketing options, please see the Winter Festival 2011 ticketing website. If you decide to attend the event, it is worth noting that ticket prices are cheaper online - the discounts range from $2 to $6 off the original price, however a $2.50 booking fee will apply.
