I never thought that a city could tell stories. It is indeed a strange thought to believe that a city may can speak. But the other day, I heard a story.. a story about the city of Melbourne.

You must be wondering what am I talking about? I am talking about an exciting company called . This company conducts walking tours in around Melbourne. What is special about these tours is that it is not just an ordinary guided tour but a historic tour during which the guide narrates stories about the city, its happenings, its people and its history.

There are different types of tours conducted by this company. There are walking tours of the Laneways of Melbourne, tours which show off the street art of the city which is one of those unique aspects that makes Melbourne a creative city, tours in the historic gardens and tours which tell stories about the aboriginal people to name a few. There are spine chilling ghost tours as well for the brave hearted.

I went on the Laneways walk.It was then that I realised that a city can tell tales as well. The cobbled streets, the hidden corners and even the underground drains have a memory stalked away. The guide took us to the main buildings of the city like the GPO and the council buildings and he told us the story of when the buildings were constructed in the 1800s and what used to happen in them. The architecture tells tales of the people it housed and the the walls have markings of what had happened in the days gone by.
Stories about the GPO fascinated me the most. He told us how the sorting table used to work and how people anxious to check their mails waited outside the post office in the hope of some news. The laneways walk also takes people into Chinatown of Melbourne and tells stories of the immigrants.

The three hour walk was one of the most memorable experiences that I have had in this city. The fact that everything has a meaning and a place of reason was proved in those three hours. Buildings, sign posts, paintings which I would have passed by without noticing came out and stood in fromt of me in a way that I will never be unnoticed again.

These tours are also a great way to meet new people, fellow travellers and adventurers. If someone is new to the city, this is the best way to show them around and for those who have lived here for years, I can bet there are stories which even you haven't heard before.

So next time there's a weekend off and you are wondering what to do, join these walks and hear a story you haven't heard before.
