See actors at work
The life of a struggling actor is never a glamourous affair.

If you're not from the wealthiest of families you need a fairly well paid job, that allows you to take chunks of time off for rehearsals, performances, classes, auditions, fittings, and filming.

You feel tied down to the beast, that is the acting industry. You have to be readily available, undyingly positive and open minded to have an inkling of 'success' to some degree.

While you're chasing the next project you have to find ways of keeping your creative juices flowing. And the best way to do this is by 'Theatre Slam'-ing.

Theatre Slam is a monthly event where the actors of Melbourne 'slam down' their talents to the eager audience of punters and industry professionals, in the hope they'll be crowned the Theatre Slam champion.

The evening is played out in a series of rounds '1 minute Maestros', '2 minute Wonders' and '3 minute Masters'. The 1 and 3 minute rounds are single actor rounds, where each artiste performs a monologue. The 2 minute is a improvised scene where two actors collaborate who have never worked together.

It offers a great opportunity to network or simply just be entertained by the city's thesps.

I have been bowled over by the talent displayed at Theatre Slam the handful of times I have gone. Laughing till I cry and being seriously in awe.

Theatre Slam is held the first Wednesday of each month. At the Order of the Melbourne,Swanston Street.
