An MSO Concert is all-encompassing not just because of their rich performances, or the sheer volume of musicians that enter the stage, or because the Conductor looks impressive, milking every sound and momentum from the musicians - but also because the music and sounds they produce with just the right nuance runs away with your heart and soul. If you love music, you can't help but be moved by the precision of every musician as they come together as one, making your heart swell with every sound that fleshes out just the right emotion from you, to suit whatever is happening on stage or on screen. 2024 is here and there's much to look forward to with the MSO .

Cybec Showcase kicks open the lineup on Tue 30 Jan 6.30pm at the Iwaki Auditorium , 120-130 Southbank Blvd, Southbank. Get your tickets via the given link . The MSO will be performing the works of emerging composers (image above) Martin Cheney, Katia Geha, Klearhos Murphy and Christine Pan. Each year, the Cybec program selects four participants to be mentored by leading Australian composers and compose a 10-minute piece. The four pieces are performed by the MSO in a showcase, following which, one of the four participants is chosen as the MSO’s Young Composer in Residence and commissioned to write further pieces. Do come along to hear the works of these four talented composers.

A special event, The Lion King in Concert is up next on Sat 3 Feb 1pm - and - 7.30pm at The Plenary, MCEC, 1 Convention Centre Pl, South Wharf. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2024, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will premiere Disney’s The Lion King in Concert, as it performs the beloved Oscar® winning songs by Elton John and Tim Rice and Oscar® winning score by Hans Zimmer, live to screen. This concert is suitable for the whole family. If you've been wanting to introduce your little ones to the orchestra, there's no better time as they engross themselves in the film and hopefully be in awe of the live performance that accompanies it. Relive the story of Simba. Again, tickets via link .

Another special event, Fri 9 Feb 7.30pm at Arts Centre Melbourne's Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Rd, Southbank, catch Meg Washington 's electrifying, soulful performance she's renowned for. Meg has been nominated for 10 ARIA Awards and won three, including Breakthrough Artist and Best Female Artist for 2010’s I Believe You Liar, and her fourth album Batflowers was nominated for the 2020 Australian Music Prize. Meg has a lot to give with having released new songs, with more new music to come. Having seen Nicholas Buc (Lion King's Conductor) and Vanessa Scammell (Meg Washington's Conductor) in action, I'm a fan of both. Vanessa will conduct as Meg showcases her latest tracks alongside hits like Catherine Wheel, Lazarus Drug, Kiss Me Like You’re Going to Die, Skeleton Key and more.

A Classical Special Event where East Meets West, you can't miss the Chinese New Year event on Sat 17 Feb 7.30pm at Hamer Hall. Do note that Lion King and the Chinese New Year events are selling fast, so be sure to get in early so as not to be disappointed. Welcome the Year of the Dragon with soprano Cathy-Di Zhang and the MSO performing evocative selections by Qiufeng and Puccini, conducted by Xu Zhong. You can't afford to miss one of 2024's cultural highlights in a program that blends Chinese and Western masterworks which celebrates cross-cultural connections through music. Please note: due to unforeseen circumstances, Hui He is unable to perform as originally scheduled.

This is but the tip of the iceberg, with lots more to look forward to for the rest of the year on the What's On page. There's Puccini in the Park (Wed 21 Feb), a free concert at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl; along with two other concerts following on the 24th and 28th of Feb, which are also free.
