Melbourne Street Fashion: Summer 2013/14

Because of the seasonal difference between Australia and Europe, fashion Down Under tends to take on a haute-inspired life of its own. Even across the country, you can pick whether a lad is from the Gold Coast or a lass is from the country by what they wear, so in preparation for the upcoming holiday fun let's take a look at what's going on in Melbourne's streetwear scene today.

The nineties are definitely back in vogue, with choker-tight necklaces and midriff-baring tops to be seen on the uber-cool streets of Brunswick and Fitzroy. This has melted in with the existing hipster culture to produce a variety of denims – skinny jeans as well as boyfriend-style, and of course overalls, with a less clean-cut, more 'grunge' feel, so if you want to put a few artistic rips into your favourite pants, go for it. For those brave enough to take on denim shirts, skirts and jackets – now is your time to shine! Of course, no one can go past a well-fitting pair of denim shorts - just remember to keep it classy, those are shorts, not underwear! Relaxed, boyfriend-style fits are popular in the city at the moment, and can be worn with almost anything.

Despite the warmer weather relaxing us all, CBD and eastern Melburnians have retained a sense of the classic Melbourne tailoring, taking up asymmetric skirts and skorts and boxy, thickly-cut crops. After winter's flare, skirts have slimmed to a chic pencil cut, and those long beachy waves have shortened slightly to a well-maintained, feminine, collarbone-length cut.

With summer now at our fingertips floral dresses are of course a staple. Bold, simple daisies are appearing, and there is a reduction in the number of "cut-out" dresses on the streets – about time! While you've got the flowers, throw a few in your hair too, as floral headbands are still a Thing. This summer it's more about free-flowing, nineties style with a modern twist – semi-sheer socks, chic blazers or a well-kept coiffure. You'll still get away with a high waist, but perhaps for only one season longer. Prints are likewise still in, but steer clear of bold slogans unless it's a brand name.

With the exodus of the thin craze and the rise of fitspo, sporting gear is becoming more common as daywear. While I'm not totally opposed to this, I will warn you that you'll look like a bit of a fool if you're constantly in your leggings and runners but are never actually seen running.

Finally, leather is still kicking around, but at a minimum as the temperature climbs higher, and likewise ballet flats have been swapped for the more comfortable leather sandals. Above all, choose your trends wisely because they never stay for long!

Happy shopping!
