Event: -
Salami and food lovers - this is the place for you
Salami lovers unite! - This is going to be a fun event!

Many Italian families will be continuing their ancient tradition of making salami! This often happens in winter in Melbourne, in cold garages across almost every suburb of the city! Making salami is a true nose to tail philosophy, where no food or any part of this process, gets wasted.

In years gone by in Italy, one pig could feed an entire family. This could see them through the whole of winter as every part was used and nothing was thrown out. After this was all finished with, the families would get together to celebrate finishing their hard work and they would celebrate with music, dancing, wine and of course salami!

Now, we have the Melbourne Salami Festa and this is a chance to bring back these important celebrations. These meetings would, however, not be complete if there was not a competition to decide whose salami was the best tasting!

So, for all you people who think yours is the best, now is your chance to enter into this competition to prove your point!

There will be a panel of expert judges who will decide which is the best homemade salami in the show. There will also be a People's Choice award.

But there is more to this event than just the competition. It is also a celebration of family, friends, tradition and of course, food. This festa will bring people from all different backgrounds together in order to appreciate a main component of the slow food movement.

There will be plenty of homemade Italian cooking, live music, salami making demonstrations. You will also get the opportunity to meet the families who are competing and taste their wares - you never know - you may even learn some of their secrets.

There will also be a few of Melbourne's top restaurants here, as well as these various demonstrations of salami-making. These will cover breaking down the pig and right through to making salami and mortadella.

The celebration is also about you - those of you who keep this tradition alive as, without you, there would be no salami festa.

To enter your salami, you will need to fill in the details here and provide between 1 kg and 1.5 kg of salami. You will also need to be available to drop off your salami entry for judging at Welcome to Thornbury on 6th October. Each team is able to enter up to 3 types of salami for judging.

The official Captain and Vice Captain of your team you will receive VIP status at the festa. This will entitle them to the following benefits:

Free entry to the festa
Team Captain's lanyard
Enough tasting plates to taste every entry
A complimentary beer, wine or soft drink on entry
