Steiner Education is a teaching method developed by Rudolf Steiner.
Many Steiner schools around Victoria hold their annual Spring Fair/Open Day in October or November. The Steiner Fair is a wholesome family and community event that celebrates education and nature. I often feel as though I have stepped into another time and space - almost like a medieval town market. The slower pace feels relaxing and enjoyable. The quality stalls, food and fun are quite different to other markets.

The Steiner Fair is a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping amongst the unique artisan stalls as well as an opportunity to walk through the classrooms and speak to staff. I love looking at the classrooms with their chalkboards, wooden furniture in unique Steiner style buildings that are designed to blend in, to visually and functionally work with nature.
It's now my third year attending the Steiner Fair in Emerald. It's my favourite one because of its picturesque location. The route I take to get there is through the undulating green hills of Lysterfield.
My first stop is usually the homemade cake stall. Once I have chosen from the array of cakes, I grab a coffee and enjoy the atmosphere and view. I then find some workshops to lead the kids at and hit the stalls.

Market stalls vary somewhat from year to year. There are plants, handmade Steiner (Waldorf) toys, felted products, wooden toys of all types like swords, cars and games. You can also find wooden nativity scenes, candles, soaps, food items, body products and tea blends. Last year I picked up my handmade wind chimes by Mountain Song Wind Chimes.

My kids look forward to the second-hand stall where their pocket money stretches a long way to pick up great gifts for Christmas at very reasonable prices. There is also a second-hand clothing stall with items in good condition.
Around lunchtime, we head for the BBQ that sells organic and biodynamic meal then back to the cake stall for dessert. The steady beat of drums keeps an earthy rhythm throughout the day as the drumming circle is in the heart of the market. Anyone can have a go.
We meander through the classrooms and gardens where various activities are dotted around including planting vegetable seedlings and a tree with a rope ladder that not may kids can resist. Live music and homemade lemonade are on the lawn area with a spectacular view over native forest and Cardinia Reservoir. A band plays on the lawn where you can also try your hand at juggling.
Each Steiner Fair offers something different and all have the unique Steiner inspired atmosphere. follow the links below to each fair for more details.
