South Melbourne Market, located at 322-326 Coventry Street, South Melbourne, is worth the visit if only to devour freshly shucked $1 oyster shots. A small and somewhat crowded space offering stalls ranging from the deli, home-goods, fruit and vegetables, massage, and fashion. A perfect way to end a day of grocery shopping or looking for that unique gift for your eccentric relative or friend is to sit in the outdoor covered area of one of the selection of food stores lining the street, where your ears are treated to live music and your taste buds to paella and sangria, steamed dumplings, or a healthy salad option.

At the Queen Victoria Market, 513 Elizabeth Street Melbourne, you'll find everything and anything from fresh produce, clothes and accessories, bric-a-brac, pot-plants, live chickens, and a variety of souvenirs. The food court, not recommended when so many great cafés and restaurants exist in the closely neighbouring walkable suburbs of Carlton and North Melbourne, however in the Deli section you'll find German Bratwursts and Doner Kebabs to make you salivate, and the usual burger and chips fast food options to put a smile on any child's face.

For dessert, queue up for a piping hot sugar dusted jam filled doughnut sold from a caravan parked usually near the food court, it's worth the wait! One of the highlights of QVM is the Suzuki Night Market, held on Wednesday nights during the summer, patrons are treated with international food stalls ($10 a plate), live music from a different Nation each week, and of course a selection of craft markets to see you strolling through and buying items that will likely see the back of the shed within a year.

The upscale Prahran Market, 163 Commercial Road South Yarra, offers free live music on Sundays, cooking demonstrations on Thursdays and activities for the kids throughout the week. Here you will find a delectable range fresh fruit and vegetables, Asian groceries, florists, speciality stores exclusively selling honey, eggs, nuts, and tea to name a few, and a fabulous outdoor food court offering Vietnamese, Greek, and pub-fare, with plenty of seating area and a mini carousel to keep children momentarily occupied. My personal recommendation is for Claringbold's Seafoods, where you'll find the freshest of seafood and also the best take away sushi in Melbourne.
