Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Melbourne Japanese Summer Festival at Federation Square, corner Swanston and Flinders Streets in the City is going to be something else! Sunday 24 February 2019 from 11.30am to 5.30pm is the date and time, so put that in your diary, and don't miss out! A more than popular festival, it's not just the Japanese that'll be dressed in kimonos on the day. Everyone loves a good kimono!
It's your time to shine!! Show off your moves and join the Bon Odori Dance. You get two chances at 1.35pm and 2.55pm at the Yagura (2nd) Stage. Come dressed to impress as you can enter the Best Dressed Competitions going, with Awards being handed out at 3.45pm on the Main Stage.
As usual, there are two categories you can enter for those who love to dress up. Yukata/Kimono and Cosplay. The first is proudly supported by Melbourne Star who will help judge the category, plus there'll be special guest judges from Madman for the Cosplay category. You could win some fab prizes such as a Melbourne Star Private Cabin ticket or a $200 Madman gift voucher, just to name a couple. CHECK HERE for entry requirements and other details, including prizes you can win. Fun!
A major, large scale event like this doesn't happen magically without the help of volunteers. If you'd like to contribute your services as a volunteer, head to the website to find out more and fill out the application as necessary.
The event kicks off with an amazing Taiko Drumming performance by Wadaiko Rindo who are masters at what they do. A great way to get the heart started and the pulse beating for an event jam-packed with lots going on. Japanese culture is on show with traditional and contemporary performances and food and activities for all ages. Aside from traditional acts and dance performances, debuting will be a bilingual talk show with Rupasensei. All-time, long-time favourites, George & Noriko will also be performing at 3.25pm on the main stage. Energy charged performers, they are no strangers to Melbourne.
There'll be fun, cultural activities like origami and yoyos for the whole family to enjoy, plus lots of arts and crafts for the creative and fashionable. The beautiful River Terrace will be lined with stalls and food trucks filled with the delicious authentic tastes of Japan, so get your takoyaki, okonomiyaki and yakitori on! Plus there's other festival favourites like ice-cream and Japanese beer or sake for some relief on a hot summers day. There's something for everyone!
The festival will conclude with the drawing of highly anticipated raffle prizes at the end of the afternoon. With over 30 prizes, including a major raffle prize of a pair of JAL economy-class return tickets to Tokyo, be in it to win it!
