Sun 10 Feb 2013

The annual Japanese Summer Festival returns for another year. Since 2010, the Japanese Society of Melbourne and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Melbourne Inc have been bringing Melburnians a taste of Japanese culture in the heart of Docklands.

Previously it was known as the Osaka Festival and the festival was held at the Treasury Gardens. Since 2011, the crowd capacity has surpassed 10,000 attendees and this year will be no different. In 2013, the organisers have also decided to shift to an earlier start time of 1pm after feedback from visitors.

Expect a variety of food stalls, Taiko drumming and dancing performances, sumo wrestling, shamisen (3 stringed guitar), traditional Japanese games and calligraphy to name a few. There will also be a major raffle draw of two return flight tickets to Japan. Stallholders will be selling kimonos, textiles and grocery items found commonly in the Japanese household.

A timetable outlining the activities and performances for the day will be updated here closer to the event date.

How do I get there?
Admission is free. If you decide to drive up to Docklands, there is parking available for $7 daily or near Harbour town shopping precinct.

Melway: 2E D4
Trams: City Circle Tram 35 – Stop Harbour Esp.
Tram 70 / 86 to Waterfront City Docklands – Last Stop

It is a family friendly event and suitable for all ages. If you recently missed the Japan Culture Festival at Collingwood Town Hall then fear not, this event is similar in nature. You will walk away learning more about Japan by the end of the day or at least satisfy your stomach with the variety of street food on offer.

Arigato Gozaimazu!
