The annual Melbourne International Jazz Festival returns to Melbourne this Winter. The 10 day festival opens on June 4, 2011 and will see over 100 artists perform in iconic live music venues such as Melbourne Town Hall, The Forum Theatre , Melbourne Recital Centre, Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, Palais Theatre, Australian Centre for the Moving Image and Federation Square.

Highlights of the 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival line-up include;

A double-bill of Jason Moran & The Bandwagon with Vijay Iyer & Rudesh Mahanthapa




The full line-up can be viewed on the Melbourne International Jazz Festival here. Besides the ticketed events, there are also a range of free events occurring in and around the city of Melbourne during the Melbourne International Jazz Festival; for example The Big Jam and Opening Celebration Concert, which will both take place at Federation Square and Metlink Musos, which will see a range of artists, bands and ensembles perform in around the public transport network. Federation Square will also be the site of free live music events throughout the ten-day festival; you can view the luchtime concert and twilight concert schedule here.

There are also several opportunities to attend a Masterclass with a Jazz great at the Bennetts Lane Jazz Club. Currently Sun Ra Arkestra, Bae Il Dong, Jim Black, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Norma Winstone and Kurt Rosenwinkel are all presenting a Masterclass; click on the respective links for full details.

Special family events will also be part of the festivities; there are two ArtPlay workshops; Young Crooners and Kazoo Jam with The Mudcakes, as well as Play School's Big Jazz Adventure and the Urban Mesh Workhouse.

Plus the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is presenting a special film program entitled Jazz on Film, while The Kelvin Club will be presenting four special evenings of Jazz.
