The
Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2011. And while the three week event does not officially kick off until July 21, 2011, the event organisers have offered a preview of some of the brilliant feature films coming our way. So let's get straight to it, here are some of the esteemed features you can view at MIFF this year;
Under the banner of International Panorama, comes the acclaimed
Submarine , the UK coming-of-age drama, which is the first feature film directed by Richard Ayoade.
Ayoade, who has appeared in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd, has also had a successful career as a music video director. He has directed music videos for the Arctic Monkeys (including their live concert film
At the Apollo ), The Last Shadow Puppets, Vampire Weekend, Kasabian and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. You can see some of Ayoade's memorable music videos below;
Submarine, which stars Craig Roberts, Yasmin Paige, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine, has had a successful run on the 2010/2011 film festival circuit, having screened at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival, 54th London Film Festival, 27th Sundance Film Festival and 61st Berlin International Film Festival. Currently Submarine has a 91% rating on
Rotten Tomatoes .
Another acclaimed feature screening at MIFF this year is
Jane Eyre , the
latest adaptation of the 1847 novel of the same name by Charlotte Brontë. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, who previously directed the award winning
Sin Nombre in 2009, the feature stars Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench and Sally Hawkins.
The romantic drama currently has a 83% rating on
Rotten Tomatoes .
Another highlight of the film program comes straight from this year's 64th Cannes Film Festival -
Le Gamin au vélo (The Kid with a Bike) , which was awarded the
Grand Prix . Directed by Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, whose previous feature films include the award winning L'Enfant (The Child) in 2005 and Le silence de Lorna (Lorna's Silence) in 2008, the drama stars Cécile de France, Thomas Doret and Jérémie Renier.
Another major award winner screening at this year's MIFF is
Jodaeiye Nader az Simin (A Separation) , a drama directed by Asghar Farhadi, starring Leila Hatami, Peiman Ma'adi, Shahab Hosseini, Sareh Bayat and Sarina Farhadi.
The drama concerning a divorce, was awarded the prestigious Golden Bear, Silver Bear for Best Actor (shared by Peiman Ma'adi and Shahab Hosseini) and Silver Bear for Best Actress (shared by Leila Hatami and Sareh Bayat), at this year's 61st Berlin International Film Festival.
There are also a range of documentaries screening, including
Cave of Forgotten Dreams , a 3-D documentary film by Werner Herzog and
Project Nim , directed by James Marsh (Man on Wire).
Plus there is a special focus on Asian cinema, under the banner of Accent on Asia, which includes screenings of the acclaimed drama romance
Noruwei no morib (Norwegian Wood) , directed by Anh Hung Tran and
Jûsan-nin no shikaku (13 Assassins) , directed by Takashi Miike.
Another 2011 MIFF highlight is Backbeat, a music documentary film program, which includes screenings of
Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest , directed by Michael Rapaport and
The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 , directed by Göran Olsson.
There is also a special selection of feature films for younger audiences under the banner of Next Gen, which includes screenings of the acclaimed
Africa United , directed by Debs Gardner-Paterson and the animation
The Ugly Duckling , directed by Garri Bardin.
Also part of MIFF 2011 is a short film program, sport documentary film program (which include screenings of
Senna and
Bobby Fischer Against the World ), and under the banner of Networked, a collection of films focused on our relationship with modern technology.
The full details of the 2011 MIFF program, including special events and the announcement of the Opening Night Film (
Red Dog has already been announced as the Closing Night Film), will be unveiled in early July.
