Drumroll for Melbourne please
We all love Melbourne but perhaps don't realise how much the rest of the world does as well. In fact the votes are in and counted and in 2014 Melbourne has won a series of world's best awards.
So here is what are we are best at in the whole wide world:
Best Comic Book Shop

Just in, is the news that Melbourne's All Star Comics store has been crowned best in the world, scoring the Spirit of Comics Retailer Award at the 26th annual Eisner Awards in the US ( the world's most prestigious comic book event.)
It is not just about how this store looks which is sensational but also because it hosts so many events where people get to meet comic book creators. All Star Comics sell new releases but also have a whole lot of older comic issues and graphic novels. Owners Mitch and Troy follow up on requests and often order in hard to find titles for customers.

It has been news for quite awhile but we love to rub it in and it is only made official what we all knew deep down. Coffee is in our veins, we mainline the stuff. The reason: Melbourne has the World's Best Coffee according to one of the world's leading travel websites, booking.com. We beat Rome and Vienna but most importantly we beat Sydney. I won't tell you where to go for great coffee because you know your own area and where the good coffee is. I listed mine here.. But some popular haunts include Brother Baba Budan, Dukes Coffee Roasters and Market Lane Coffee. Fellow WEN writer Dayna Chu came up with her list of Best of the Best click here.
As the barista at Brother Baba Budan, Jos Turner, said in the Herald Sun "The tourists love Melbourne because our coffee and cafe culture is a part of our lives and is a very unique thing to Melbourne."
Out of of all the endorsements Mebourne got 301, 187 for Vienna, 116 for Rome and 86 for Lviv in the Ukraine. Oh, and
Sydney was 16th on the list with only 20 endorsements for their coffee.
Best Pizza (margherita)

Melbourne also has the World's Best Pizza. Local pizza maker Johnny Di Francesco, owner of 400 Gradi, had his margherita pizza named the best in the world at the World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy in mid-April. The competition attracts 600 entrants from 35 countries and to have an Australian win over an Italian is something to shout out about.
Mr Pizza, as he is now known to his customers, will be opening a second restaurant at the Crown complex at Southbank.
Best Large Sports City

Melbourne was named the World's Best 'Large' Sports City – 2014 SportsBusiness Ultimate Sports City Awards in late March. It was listed as being the best city in the world for sports venues. Some of the events that make us the greatest on earth are the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the Australian Open Tennis Championships. Again I don't think this was telling us something we didn't already know. For better or worse Melbourne is sports mad and our huge almighty sporting venues surely rival the Colosseum as in days of old.
Best Luxury Spa
While officially not quite Melbourne it is where we go to relax and with the freeway it is now just hop skip and a foot flat to the floor drive away. Peninsula Hot Springs has won the title of Best Luxury Mineral Spring Spa at the 2014 World Luxury Spa Awards.
If you haven't been to this place it is heaven. These are geo-thermal springs, and you can immerse yourself in soothing mineral waters amidst a tranquil rural setting. There are more than 20 different bathing experiences in the social Bath House area, and a private area for personal time out with luxurious treatments, baths and pampering. I'm a big fan of going to this venue an night when it lights up like some kind of aquatic fairyland. Swimming in one of the caves you expect to come upon King Neptune with his triad.
Melbourne's Triple M won the award for Most Innovative Radio Station Of The Year. The 4th annual independent Worldwide Radio Summit is held yearly in Hollywood. The event is organised by A&R Worldwide and popular US website AllAccess.com. It is now in the Hall of Fame with other previous winners like BBC Radio 1.
Triple M Melbourne combines a good balance of news talk, sports talk, and comedy with a rock soundtrack. Melbourne rocks, we all knew that!
