Webber, Schumacher, Senna, Alonso, Lowndes, Skaife, Tander, Rossi. What do all these racing legends have in common besides the fact that they are motor racing legends? Go-Karts!

With the majority of go-kart tracks in Melbourne, you can just rock up and drive yourself a kart. It's a great idea for anyone who needs to organise their next birthday or office party.

Cost can vary between different tracks, but the average price for 30 laps is around $50 - $60.

Now before you decide to go off to your go-kart track of choice, allow me to provide you a few racing tips that you can prove useful when beating your opponents.

Everything around you will be fast except your feet and hands.
When you brake, use your feet to squeeze the brake pedal rather than stomp on it. That goes the same with the accelerator pedal; squeeze slowly and smoothly!
With your hands, you should be steering slowly and smoothly along with your braking and accelerating. With some smooth driving and precious steering, you'll be able to gain better lap times!

Enter wide, touch the apex and exit wide.

To gain the most out of your speed, enter a corner from the widest part of the road going into the corner, crossing the inside of the corner (called the 'apex') and then finally, as you exit the corner, again use up the entire track, thus essentially creating an arc.

Brake early, touch and go early.
Just before you enter the corner, brake early while you're in a straight line. As soon as you have touched the apex, squeeze the accelerator and straighten the car with your smooth steering.

When your kart starts to slide, don't panic!
It just means that you have either exited a corner too fast or braked suddenly while you were turning. To correct a slide and stay straight again, calmly steer the kart towards the slide and the kart will naturally straighten. For example, if your turning into a left corner and the kart starts sliding to the right, steer the kart right

Look with your head.
When you turn into a corner, you should actually physically turn your head as you turn your go-kart. By doing this, you are forcing to position your eyes to look at a point of where you are heading towards.

Respect your opponents.
If you find yourself being overlapped by another driver, show respect by not blocking him.

Alright, theory is now over and now it's time for you to put theory into practice! Listed below are a few recommendations that I have for go-kart tracks in Melbourne:

Aus Carts
Located in Port Melbourne, only 5 minutes from the CBD. This indoor go-kart track has a great combination of fast straights and complicated corners; great for displaying your own racing skills. The Port Melbourne setting is fitted out with a state of the art track. Auscarts always meets high standards by constructing a purpose-built racing circuit featuring grading, sunken corners, a pit lane bridge, three long straights, fast sweepers, two tight and two wider hair pins, two switch backs and much much more.

Sunday to Friday – 10am – 10pm
Saturday – 10am – 11pm
Ace Karts
This fun outdoor go track, located in western suburbs of Sunshine, has a great mixture of medium to fast speed corners. Unlike indoor tracks, which tend to favour more skilled drivers, this track is great for everyone from first timers to pros. Since the corners are wide and fast, there are multiple racing lines and plenty of opportunities for overtaking. Personally, this is my favourite go-kart track in Melbourne!
Another little incentive for go-karting here; if you manage to beat the lap record, you get to win $250! Just some food for thought…

Monday to Friday - 10.00am - Late
Saturday & Sunday - 9.30am - Late

Another indoor go kart track, this one is probably the most challenging I have been to in Melbourne. Located in Moorabbin, this go kart track definitely provides a full racing outfit as you race around this intense and claustrophobic track with limited overtaking opportunities. Again, this indoor track tends to favour more skilled drivers, but beginners are by all means still welcome!

Monday: Closed except for group bookings
Tuesday & Wednesday: 10.00am - 9.00pm
Thursday to Saturday: 10.00am - late
Sunday: 10.00am - 9.00pm

Le Mans Go Karts
Advertised as Victoria's Biggest and newest go-cart complex, Le Mans (named after the famed racing circuit in France) does definitely live up to its name by holding three different tracks!
Daytona is the easiest of the three aimed at children between 4-9 years of age. The two other circuits of Le Mans and Lakeside are both used for nation and international go-kart events. Both tracks have a great combination of straights, tight bends, hairpins and high speed corners that really give you a feel for the g-force.

Sunday to Thursday: 10:00am – 11:00pm
Friday & Saturday: 10:00am - 11:30pm

So loaded with this information, it's all up to you to make the move. So, next time you feel the need for speed, treat yourself for an adrenaline rush on go-karts!
