When it comes to Christmas perhaps we should leave it to the European masters. They have been celebrating Christmas for a lot longer than we have in Australia. It's all about tradition in Europe, special Christmas foods, lovingly crafted Christmas decorations and white Christmases when they are lucky enough to still have them.
I have written about Melbourne's annual Swedish Christmas Bazaar
here at the Swedish Church but less well known are Melbourne's German Christmas markets,
German Christmas Market at the Melbourne Town Hall
This German Christmas market is in the plush surrounds of the Melbourne Town Hall. You can't miss the building as it is trussed up like a huge Christmas present this time of year.
At this market you can buy traditional hand crafted European Christmas decoration and special German foods such as stollen,

lebkuchen (a special baked Germand Christmas treat).
It is hosted by the
Australian German Welfare Society and all goods are authentic German items.
You will find the Melbourne Town Hall at 100 Swanston Street
Melbourne and the event is on the 5th of Thursday the 5th of December between 9.30am – 3pm. This is a free event.
German Christmas Market in North Fitzroy
If you read this in time there is also another Weihnachtsmarkt (German Christmas Market) at the Fitzroy North German-English bilingual school Deutsche School on November the 22nd.
Again it is an event steeped in German culture. There is plenty of German food including wurst, sauerkraut, beer, Gluhwein (either chilled or hot) and traditional crepes. You can also preorder handcrafted gingerbread houses and pick them up on the day.
Many of the Christmas decorations are made by the students and their families and there are also 26 local artisans with beautifully handcrafted goods for sale. There is live music and even reindeer food for the children to make.
The market is based on the traditional Christmas street stalls held throughout Germany so it is an authentic German experience for Melbourne families.
The Deutsche Schule Melbourne is at 96 Barkly St, Fitzroy North at the corner of Dean Street Friday. The market is on November 22, from 5-9 pm, followed by bilingual Carols by Candlelight at 9pm.
